When I was a child, my mom always gave us new Christmas pajamas on Christmas eve. It was something I always looked forward to. I love the idea of doing this tradition with my own kids, but with a twist. I give my girls them on December 1st rather than Christmas eve so they can wear their Christmas jammies for the whole month of December. In addition to new jammies, I also always include a Christmas book. And that night they get to read the book during bedtime in their new Christmas pajamas.
I gift the December 1st box during breakfast. I simply tie up the pajamas and book together with a pretty ribbon (no wrapping). But if you wanted to make more into a Christmas “box” you could also include a candy cane, advent calendar, hot chocolate, or a new tree ornament and put it into a cute box or basket.
I deeply believe that holiday traditions are more just about the gifts. They are a way to make little ones feel important and loved. And of course, it helps them (and us!) get into the Christmas spirit.
And if you need ideas, here are some of my favorite Christmas jammies that I considered:
Holly Dog Pajamas Aren’t these just the cutest. I know my pup-loving girl would love these.
Solid Green These are merino wool and also are the warmest base layer for cold weather. We own a few pieces from this brand are love them.
Fair Aisle These fleece ones are so fun and have a great price.
Pink Trees It’s no secret that I love pink and I think these are wonderful.
I ultimately decided on these from Plain Jane. I love these subtle pink and red pattern that will work well past Christmas. Also, if you haven’t tried this brand yet, they are the softest most comfy jammies out there. My girls love them as much as I do.
Here are some of my favorite Christmas picture books I found this year.
Together written by Heather Strickler and illustrated by Martha Ratcliff: Hands down my favorite Christmas book. The story is so sweet and the illustrations are beautiful. And lucky for you, I am doing a giveaway of this lovely Christmas book over on Instagram.
Book Description: Together is the story of a little boy who visits Santa, but instead of asking for gifts, he tells Santa he simply wants to spend time together with his family enjoying all of their favorite holiday traditions. As he says, it doesn’t matter what we do, something grand or something small, I know our time together is the greatest gift of all.
Mr. Bottington’s Studio Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Park Moore and Illustrated by Mr. Bottington’s Studio: I’ve preordered this book and don’t have it yet. But I am a big fan of Mr. Botttingtons Studio’s art and am excited to see this book.
Book Description: Mr. Boddington’s Studio delivers a stylish and modern illustrated reimagining of the most iconic Christmas picture book story using the words of the Clement Clarke Moore’s poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.”
A perennial bestseller and timeless gift in the holiday season, multiple adaptations exist of this classic holiday tale, almost exclusively illustrated in bold classic colors. Mr. Boddington’s Studio provides a fresh take by using the same poem and updating the style with a sophisticated and modern color palette. Children and parents alike will delight in revisiting this classic holiday tale with the iconic and fresh Mr. Boddington’s style.
The Tree That’s Meant to Be by Yuval Zommer. I gift my niece and nephew a Christmas book to share every year for Christmas and this is the one I picked to gift them this year.
Book Description:
This Christmas, families can read this heartfelt, gorgeous holiday story about a lonely little Christmas tree that learns what it means to be loved—with a powerful message to children that they are perfect just as they are.
A small, crookled fir tree is left all alone after the others near it in the forest are chosen by families as Christmas to bring home. But when the forest animals gather around the lonely little tree to cheer it up and celebrate the season, it finds the warmth of the holidays in the heart of a cold, snowy forest.
This is a charming and classic-feeling holiday picture book with a timely message about celebrating our differences and sticking by our friends. Families will love making this part of their holiday traditions, as a perfect book to talk about kindness, generosity, and the true meaning of Christmas.
Pick a Pine Tree by Patricia Toht. A sweet story about the traction of picking out a Christmas tree.
Book Description: Part of the magic of the Christmas season stems from the traditions that families and friends take part in every year: hanging up stockings; putting lights in the windows; and, one of the most important of all, picking out and taking home the Christmas tree. With style and warmth, debut author Patricia Toht and Jarvis, the author-illustrator of Alan’s Big, Scary Teeth, evoke all the rituals of decorating the tree — digging out boxes jam-packed with ornaments and tree trimmings, stringing tinsel, and, at long last, turning on those twinkling lights. Joyously drawn and rhythmically written, this celebration of family, friends, and the holiday season is as merry as the tradition it depicts.
When Santa was a Baby by Linda Bailey. If you are looking for a Christmas board book then this is one you need to check out. It is so sweet and silly.
Book Description: Santa’s parents think their little one is absolutely wonderful, even though he has a booming voice instead of a baby’s gurgle, loves to stand in front of the refrigerator, gives his birthday presents away, trains his hamsters to pull a matchbox sleigh … and has an unusual interest in chimneys. The adorably funny portrait of an oddball kid who fulfills his destiny – and two very proud parents.
I really love holiday traditions. I hope this article inspires you to start your own December 1st Christmas box tradition.
